Welcoming a new baby into the world is such a wonderful thing! Words fail to describe how precious and fleeting those first few days and weeks are with your sweet new babe. I adore newborn photography, and I would love to be able to capture a few of these moments for you and create photographs that you will treasure forever.
Here are a few things to consider as you start to plan your newborn photo session.
Timing:
The best timing for newborn photos is when baby is one to two weeks old. We can work outside this window of course, but this is the time when baby’s skin is usually the clearest and baby is still sleeping well enough to tolerate some posing and outfit changes.
If you have already missed this window, don’t stress! We can have fun capturing whatever stage your baby is in!
Location:
I will come to you! Cozy up with a yummy drink and a comfy blanket and let me take care of the traveling. Don’t worry about cleaning your house! All we need is one spot that is relatively clear of clutter such as a bed or a couch if you are doing a lifestyle session and/or a small space on the floor if you choose a stylized session. I have portable lights as well as props such as blankets and baskets that I can bring, depending on the style photo session you choose.
Scheduling:
Since baby’s arrival can be unpredictable, it’s best to let me know your due date as soon as possible so that I can pencil you in and leave some flexible availability around your date. Then just let me know when baby is born so that we can nail down a day and time that works for both of us!
Style Choice:
I offer two styles of newborn photography: lifestyle and stylized.
Lifestyle photography focuses on capturing your family and baby in the most natural way possible. I will still give you some posing prompts, but my goal here is to capture the interactions between family members and new baby in an authentic way.
Stylized newborn photos are another great way to capture that amazing sleepy, squishy adorableness of a brand new baby. These sessions are focused more on the baby and will typically include various props and outfits/wraps. I have wraps and props that I will bring with me, but these photos are even more special if we can incorporate items that have special meaning to you. A baby blanket or outfit knitted by a grandmother, a stuffed animal passed on from a parent or sibling, a rainbow tutu commemorating a previous loss, and even a new headband or outfit picked out by a parent are a few examples that my families have used to infuse their own personality and heritage into their photo sessions.
You can choose whichever style you prefer or even do some of each!
Tips for a great session:
My number one tip for having the best session ever is to feed baby well as close to the start of our session as possible. There will be time built into our session for more feedings as necessary, but well fed babies are always the happiest babies for pictures!
It is also a good idea to keep the room where we will be taking photos nice and warm. This will help baby stay comfortable and content through outfit changes and shifts in position, and it is especially important for stylized photos.
